April’s Artist of the Month: Jayantika Arora

At Teen Voices, we’re all about empowering girls, that is, helping girls find their power, individually and collectively. But what is power, really? Where does it come from? How do you get it? What does power look like? How does the "in" crowd at your school gain power and how do they use it? What about those who feel powerless?  For the April Artist of the Month contest, we asked our readers these fundamental questions, and asked them to create art that represented their answers.

The response was fantastic, and then we asked our Facebook fans to determine the winner.  In all, our Facebook fans submitted more than 1,450 votes.  We’re pleased to announce that Jayantika Arora, 19, of India, is the April contest winner! When asked to reflect upon her artwork Arora replied: “My art depicts the strength and power that every girl in this world possesses. She carries a power to give life, a power that helps her to carry the world inside her. And as she discovers this power, she will find herself leading her way through a journey of bliss and conquest.”

As Teen Voices April Artist of the Month, Arora will receive an official Artist of the Month t-shirt, donated by T-Shirts.com; a free one-year membership to Teen Voices; publication in our online or print magazine; and a chance to exhibit at Blick Art Materials in Boston in 2013.

Arora will advance to our Artist of the Year contest (to be held in January 2013) to compete for a $250 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials-Boston and a full scholarship (tuition, room, and board) to the Pre-College Summer Art Studio at the renowned School of the Museum of Fine Arts—a $4,000 value!
