Guidance for Grown-Ups February 2007 Make a Difference for Darfur
Virtual Activism: Connecting Online to Raise Darfur Awareness (link back to feature)
This Discussion Guide contains the following Activity Sections:
- The Answers to Your Questions
- Problem Solving: Exploring Options, Giving Advice
- Make a Historical and Global Connection: Changing Options
I. The Answers to Your Questions
The purpose of this activity is to understand the history of genocide and to specifically learn about genocide in Darfur.
- Summarize the history of genocide and its incidences since 1904 in Namibia for the teens or ask them to read about it at www.ppu.org.uk.
- Ask the teens to read one or more of the background statements (listed under resources) on the genocide in Darfur.
- For an interactive learning experience*, teens can take the role of a displaced Darfurian online by negotiating survival at a refugee camp.
II. Problem Solving: Exploring Options, Giving Advice
The purpose of this activity is to learn from the example of one young woman who has helped make a difference for Darfur.
- Read the Teen Voices interview with high school student Ana Slavin, who launched Dollars for Darfur with a friend and classmate. What other questions would the teens ask Ana?
- Learn more about the work of Dollars for Darfur by visiting its Facebook and MySpace pages.
III. Make a Historical and Global Connection: Changing Options
The purpose of this activity is to imagine new ways you can make a difference in Darfur, or in your own community.
- Even though teens may be too young to vote, they are not too young to influence legislation. Ask the teens to find out whether or not their local, state, or national government representatives have taken action on behalf of Darfur. If teens want, they can send an email of thanks to the representatives who have acted in a way consistent with their beliefs, or an email requesting specific action from those who have not.
- What would it take to join the Dollars for Darfur National High School Challenge? Teens can create a page for their high school online by visiting www.savedarfur.org
- Ask the teens to brainstorm an action event on behalf of displaced Darfurians. Will they educate others? Will they raise money for an organization? Will they try to influence legislation? Will they send goods to Darfur?
