My Community
Michelle Pena, 13 Massachusetts
My community is violent.
Can't you see?
It's on TV
almost every week!
I make up my community,
yet that's not me.
You don't see me on TV
involved with murders, shootings, and robberies.
That ain't me,
that ain't my priority.
"Dorchester's the worst,"—
that's only because you make us that way.
If half of the things would change,
things wouldn't be the same!
Yet no one cares, so we gotta make noise,
to let our voices be heard.
If you complain "that Dorchester's bad,"
then change something about it
and you won't see us on TV.

I miss you so much
how I long for your touch.
Wish you were here,
but I know that you're near.
The times we spent,
they went, oh, so fast.
How I remember,
they're now in the past.
You take things for granted
until they're gone
the time we spent,
the places we went.
If only you knew
how much they really meant.
I love you with all my heart,
it's so hard being apart.
Though I know you're in a better place,
I wish I could see and touch your face.
I know you're with the angels,
and I'm forever jealous.
But I had you first,
and I'll have you last.
I will have you and the memories
in my heart.
So we will always be together
and, in reality, never apart.

The Struggle

In the eyes of a young girl
is the constantly changing world,
full of neverending confusion.
The difference in wrong and right,
the choice to give up or fight,
in a path of absolute delusion.*
Choices that she makes
and risks that she takes
will never go unseen.
The struggle to become a success,
to be better than the rest,
to be one that is looked up to.
To help others out
when they feel they need to shout,
to help them figure out what to do.
A dream, a goal,
that seems so distant,
along with a happy moment
that disappears in an instant.
Every second, every minute, she knows will count.
Her life, she knows, will greatly amount.
The high expectations,
along with the numerous obligations,
will never get in her way.
She puts aside all fear,
and will always persevere,
knowing that it'll be worth it one day.

Life Lesson

There is not enough time
to say goodbye,
or to wipe away the pain.
When one of your loved ones
has passed on,
your life is not the same.
Too many things
you have not done—
so many things to say.
You need to tell
the ones you love
you love them
every day.

Gone

When we lived through the summer,
we left the violence in the past.
For most of us it was stupid,
but for him it was his last.
He said, "That won't be me."
We all said the same.
Come to find out it was him,
"Shizz," that was his name.
He always had us laughing,
with stories of his life.
It ended suddenly,
with heartbreak and a knife.
It was before school vacation,
he said, "I'll see you when we come back."
So we left with a cheerful goodbye,
and for him that was that.
On Valentine's Day 2004,
we had broken hearts never to be mended.
That was the day we learned
that Shizz's life had ended.
We all lost a loved one
to a stab wound in his chest.
He passed on the street,
where he took his last breath.
We were saddened by the loss,
we didn't know why he died.
But now we all understand,
God wanted an angel to be there by his side.
We all wish he were here in person,
but we know that he can't be.
Though he isn't here in body,
he'll live on as a memory.
