What if I told you 24,000 people are going to die today? 24,000 people died yesterday and 24,000 more will die tomorrow. What if I told you all of these people are dying of hunger? Would you believe me? Believe it or not, all these statistics are true.
You probably don't know that 852 million people throughout the world are constantly hungry. Why, you ask? What if I told you they are just too poor and that 75 percent of the 24,000 who die each day never live to see their fifth birthday? Imagine the look on their faces as they cry to their mothers for food. These children are too young to understand that their mothers are not able to provide the food they need. Many people in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa could not even dream of eating in a week what many Americans eat every day. Does this bother you?
As you read this, you are probably not hungry, definitely not starving. You probably don't know that in 2005 there are 36.3 million Americans who are hungry or uncertain of where their next meal will come from. Thirteen million of these people are children.
What if I told you that you could do something to help stop this? You can help the hungry in your community by raising money for organizations that feed hungry people, and you can learn more about hunger and spread awareness of how to fight it. Hunger is not just some far away problem that will go away when you stop reading; people all over the world are starving. Will you help?
