Be Proud, Not Just Part of the Crowd

No one wants to be an outcast. We all want to fit in. Many girls today fear being rejected by their peers and, as a result, betray themselves by changing who they are to fit in and be liked by others. There are many ways girls do this—by using drugs and alcohol, giving up opinions and beliefs, dropping true friends, and getting into trouble with the law or at school. Although through these actions girls may become popular or get attention, in the midst of doing so, they give up the unique qualities and characteristics that make them who they really are.

"My Story of Self Betrayal" is an example of a girl who takes drugs in order to fit into a certain crowd. The poem "Masks" reveals a girl who constantly changes who she appears to be according to the people she is around. In the poem "The Crowd, Which is Ruining You," the writer witnesses her friend become part of a crowd they both formerly disliked. All of these pieces expose the danger of giving up who you are to be accepted by others.

Have you ever done something out of peer pressure that you regretted later on? Did you feel like you had betrayed yourself? What did you do about it?

I Did It to Fit In

A Friend Transformed

Quiz: Do You Give in to Fit in?

Have you ever done something that wasn't you, just to be accepted? Peer pressure affects all of us. Victoria Baldwin tells her story of becoming a part of the crowd, and an anonymous poet writes about the masks she wears to fit in.

Sometimes it's not you trying to fit in—it's one of your friends. Rachel Hubbard describes what it's like to watch a friend change into someone she doesn't know, right before her eyes. Now that you've read the article, take this quiz to see how you would react when confronted with fitting in or standing on your own.
