Music Review: Regina Spektor

Classically trained Regina Spektor is a 32-year-old, Russian-born singer and songwriter who redefines pop with her unorthodox lyrics, quirky style, and utter cuteness. Her ability to incorporate unique guttural vocalizations and off-tempo flurries into her foot-tapping melodies sets her apart from other musicians. Drawing by Talia Goodman, 16, Massachusetts.

Music Review: “Speechless” by Sonali

Singer-songwriter Sonali Argade’s debut EP, “Speechless,” tells the tale of her life through meaningful lyrics and powerful guitar riffs. Her pop sound is infectious and catchy, and all five of her tracks have an individual theme that is poignant and relatable. Sonali is not your typical artist though. All of the proceeds from her single were donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation

Music Review: “Chasing Shadows” by Strange Familiar

Indie rock band The Strange Familiar’s new album, “Chasing Shadows,” illustrates pure individuality. With the band’s diverse musical styles and strong-voiced lead vocalist, Kira Leyden, it’s hard to believe that their music doesn’t gain the popularity it deserves.

Music Review: “The Five Ghosts” by Stars

I first caught the words “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” on my Facebook newsfeed. I was intrigued and searched it that instant. That’s how I found out about Stars, an indie Canadian band that produces music unlike any I have heard before.

Music Review: “Stark” by Cherri Bomb

When I first picked up Cherri Bomb’s EP, “Stark,” I was a little skeptical. With their name being closely linked to a hit song by a famous 1970s rock band, The Runaways, I was in serious doubt that they could live up to the name. However, when I sat down and listened to their tracks, I instantly fell in love.

Von Grey, an all-girl country group, features the voices of sisters Kathryn (16), Annika (15), Fiona (13), and Petra (11), along with their 12 instruments! These four sisters sing of strength, assertiveness, and youth. “Make Some Noise” is upbeat and it’s the type of album you can blast in your car on the way to a party.

Music Review: “Deceived” by Ruth Gerson

Ruth Gerson is no newcomer to the music industry. Having already released six albums, “Deceived” brings her album count to an impressive seven CDs. New York native Gerson started her musical career after she graduated from college. Check out what Teen Voices reviewer Imani Johnson has to say about Gerson’s latest album.

Music Review: “The Luring” by Pixikill

It is hard to find a band with both killer vocals and intense instrumentals, but that is exactly what Pixikill has. The Luring is Pixikill’s debut E.P. that features five up-tempo tunes. Blaire and Jewel Restaneo, the lead singers, want their E.P. to be something girls can relate to.

Music Review: “The Bridge” by Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona, an R&B artist who sings both fast and exciting songs as well as slow, meaningful ones, strikes me as an extremely different figure from many mainstream artists. She sings not about sex and drugs, but about relationships and empowerment
